Experiences with our Motorhome,  Trips to France

ROCAMADOUR, France

Loading

ROCAMADOUR, in France, is an extraordinary and spectacular town. To some extent, it seems to be hanging on a high cliff, but still possible to walk around in. And the locals even drive through the narrow streets, partly even in trucks (which sometimes causes chaotic scenes, when the drivers are new to these streets. We drove to Rocamadour as part of a longer trip through France, Northeastspain and Andorra. Very close to the town, there is a parking area for campers. It’s a cosy place with many trees. During high season, there a time-limited access, but that was not an issue for us in September. Apart from the old Rocamadour, there is also another part of the town, with a small church, many hotels, restaurants, souvenir shops and a prehistoric cave. We went to see the little church on the first evening, but after that mainly walked around in the “real” Rocamadour. This wonderful town, with its old houses and narrow streets, together with the monastery and several church parts is absolutely well worth a visit. The roads and paths are very narrow and steep, especially from the camper parking. But if this is an obstacle, there are escalators available, against a small fee. And from the main street to the church area there are in fact many, many steps to conquer. But then you can enjoy the views from time to time when getting your breath back. A little tip, apart from arriving outside the high season, is to get up early to avoid the massive crowds from tourist buses.
