THUN, lovely town be the lake, Switzerland
THUN also has an historic Altstadt, old town, with cobbled streets and beautiful old buildings. One of the old shopping streets have quirky shops and cafés in two storeys. From this street a covered stairway with many, many steps, leads the 30 meters up to the Castle of Thun with tremendous views over Thun, Lake Thun and the Swiss Alps. The castle is more than 800 years old and is said to have been built by the Duke of Zähringen, we think he had someone helping him . Thenearby church is almost 700 years old and offers fantastic views, too. Before the river Aare flows through Thun, the water level is regulated by lock gates under the two almost 300 year’s old covered wooden bridges. It is also by these lock gates that brave surfers challenge their skills on the river waves when the gates are opened!! In the middle of the river lies the Bällis Island with lots of shops. As the river flows through the centre of Thun there are of course, many restaurants situated along the river with a vast selection for lunch or dinner.
