KLEIN Matterhorn, Zermatt, Switzerland
KLEIN Matterhorn – or Little Matterhorn, is the highest peak in Europe to be reached by a cable car. With its 3883 meters it’s enough for most people to feel the impact of the thin air. So let’s start with some warnings; signs of altitude sickness can, for example, be headache, dissiness, nausea and a fast pulse…..it’s recommended to consider a coffee break and to acclimate at Trockener Steg before the last stage. BUT, having said that, the VIEW from Klein Matterhorn is not to be missed. From the panoramic viewing platform, after another 10 meters climbing up the stairs, after a short tour by an elevator located in the tunnel, the view is nothing less but extremely fabulous. A 360 degrees view, to Italy, to Breithorn, to Mont Blanc, many other 4000+ peaks and of course to the real Matterhorn. Actually the south side of Matterhorn, a completely different impression of this so wellknown mountain. It seems so near, but in reality it’s 7 km away. On the railing of the platform many people, including us ❤, have placed love-padlocks with text or initials. Every now and then, the staff will place the padlocks-of-love in the eternal ice of the glacier……
The mountain station, called Glacier Paradise, includes a nice panorama restaurant and a souvenier shop. It’s also possible to visit the inside of the glacier, 15 meters under the surface, where a changing exhibition of ice sculptures is on display. The relatively long trip from Zermatt to the top also includes options to stop at Furi and by Schwarzsee (Black Lake), more about this in our next post
