Train to GORNERGRAT, Zermatt, Switzerland

GORNERGRAT mountain is easily reached by the Gornergrat cog railway from Zermatt. All the way up, the view to Matterhorn, over Zermatt, to lakes and glaciers is changing dramatically during the 9 km long and winding track until the Gornergrat railway station is reached at 3089 meters a.s.l. after just over half an hour. Before leaving the station we enjoyed the direct view to Matterhorn, wauw!! After this, a short hike lead us to the Kulm hotel and a restaurant with a huge panorama terrace. Further short hikes leads to the summit with an outstanding 360 degrees view over the Gorner Glacier (actually the second longest glacier in the Swiss Alps), other huge glaciers, Monte Rosa, Matterhorn, Klein Matterhorn and many other of the highest mountains in Switzerland and Italy. The Gornergrat railway has been in operation for more than 120 years and was the first electric rack railway in Switzerland. As a closing comment; the railway station might be the second highest and the track might be the second highest, the glacier the second longest, but the VIEW is second to nothing
