Swiss Army Knife
BRUNNEN, a lakeside town set on the banks of the Urner Lake and Lake Lucerne, is a great starting point if you are interested in Swiss history, including a visit to the Swiss Knife Valley Visitor Center. But also for scenic and historical boat rides by the nostalgic paddle steam boats. Our last trip was just a short ride to Treib for a late brunch…

AREUSE
The AREUSE GORGE is a magical place; the only sounds comes from the birds, the cascading water falls and some times a passing train. On hot summer days the shadow here is very comfortable. The trail begins at the train station of Noiraigue in Val de Travers (where absinthe was born!). Just follow the yellow signs to Gorges de l’Areuse and Boudry. During the approximately…

STANSERHORN
STANSERHORN is not really a very high mountain, by Swiss standards 🙂, just 1898 m.a.s.l. But still fairly impressive as it rises there from the valleys, and surrounded by lakes and other mountains. And getting there is a complete different experience compared to the other mountains. First part of the trip is by funicular, a train towed by cable. It has been like that since 1893.…

GRUYÈRES
GRUYÈRES, or the cheese town as we often name it 🙂 , is also among one of the places we visit again and again. A fine and idyllic medieval town and castle situated on the top of a hill. Some of the finest Swiss cheese variants are made here, and it comes in many different maturity levels, the best are matured for 14 months and has won…

WE DID IT!!
WE DID IT! After the failed attempt earlier (find our post from 16 July), we tried again a couple of weeks ago. It was really well worth the travel time. A bridge from peak to peak in 3000 meters altitude, WOW! Despite the solid appearance it felt very much alive 🙂 But we crossed it – and the view from the other summit was spectacular as well.https://www.glacier3000.ch/en

JAUN
Passing through the village JAUN on a tour from Gruyères (report from there will follow) to Col du Pillon, we visited this stunning and beautiful waterfall. It is even said to be a place of a very strong energy field with up to 13500 Bovis units! For decades the source of the huge amounts of water was unknown. But in 1928 some dye was…

PIZ GLORIA / 007
BOND, JAMES BOND, or agent 007 was performing here in the movie “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”. With the still relevant key words for this location: Far Up! Far Out! Far More!, the film was released in 1969. A major part of it was filmed in the building now being the revolving restaurant Piz Gloria, the 007 museum and a souvenir shop. From the restaurant…

LUZERN
LUZERN has a lot to offer, the old city centre, the lake and a fantastic view to the mountains. And then the most visible of all, the Chapel Bridge – Kapellbrücke. Crossing the river Reuss is surely best done by this bridge, admiring the tower and the triangular paintings under the roof. The bridge and two thirds of the paintings burned in 1993, so the…

TSCHUGGEN GRAND HOTEL
TSCHUGGEN Grand Hotel! Yes, is sounds impressive, and it didn’t get less impressive when we arrived. Of course expectations are relatively high when knowing we are going to stay on a 5-star superior classified hotel, member of the Leading Hotels of the World. This is not an issue here; reception, concierge, management, shuttle service, restaurants, spa, room….TOP, TOP, TOP – from arrival to departure. OK,…

PILATUS
PILATUS, a mountain peaking 2132 meters above sea level, set at the Lake Lucerne, is best reached from Alpnachstad by the steepest cogwheel railway in the world. And steep it is, at some stages up to 48 %!! The trip takes just about 30 minutes, slow enough to enjoy the fabulous views of the lake and surrounding mountains. And of course the atmosphere of the…
